Bell Canada: 100,000 customer details stolen in latest data breach

Bell Canada has warned customers it has been a victim of a data breach which exposed information of around 100,000 people. The company’s report follows just months after Bell Canada confirmed a cybercriminal accessed its database and stop email information of 1.9 million customers.

The latest attack seems less widespread, but was more powerful, with CBC News reporting information such as email addresses, user names, phone numbers, and addresses were stolen. Telecom giant Bell Canada says there is no indication of any financial details (bank, credit card) or other sensitive content being taken.

In its note, the company did not say when the breach occurred, but said it is reaching out to the affected customers.

“We apologize to our customers and are contacting all those affected,” a company spokesperson said in an email sent to customers.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada is one of the government agencies that have been notified of the breach.

“Bell works closely with law enforcement, government and the broader technology industry to combat the growth of cybercrimes, and we have successfully supported law enforcement in past prosecutions of hackers,” Bell Canada spokesperson Marc Choma explained.

Bell Canada is one of the country’s leading telecommunications providers and also among the oldest. It has been in operation since 1880 and provides over 13 million phone lines in Canada.
