Alberta gives $45 million in flood mitigation funding over four years

The government of Alberta has announced it will release an additional $45 million to help flood and drought protection projects in the province.

The investment will be implemented over the next four years. It will be broken up unto $31 million for the Alberta Community Resilience Program (ACRP) and $14 million to the Watershed Resiliency and Restoration Program (WRRP). The latter of those two project is scheduled to end at the end of 2017.

Alberta Environment and Parks explains in a press release that that money will help to create flood and drought resiliency grant programs that are crucial for Alberta’s flood mitigation infrastructure. There will be three rounds of funding for the programs:

The ARCP initiative has already helped to invest more than $100 million in community-level flood resiliency projects. This includes smaller scale mitigation like storm water management, municipal water infrastructure, flood barriers, and other crucial resilience projects in Alberta.

WRRP will receive three rounds of funding to help restore and create more than 600 hectares of wasteland and 40 kilometres of riparian land. This land sits next to waterways like lakes, wetlands, and rivers. The funding will also help in education and reaching out to communities.

The original funding allocation for the ACRP was $500 million over 10 years. The WRRP was a three-year, $21-million program.

“Flood and drought events can be devastating to Alberta families and our economy,” said Alberta’s Minister of Environment and Parks, Shannon Phillips, in the release. “Our additional investment in flood and drought resiliency will help our communities adapt to a changing climate where severe weather will be more common. Projects funded through these grant programs will help protect Albertans where they live and work and enhance our natural environment to positively impact both flood and drought resiliency.”
