Studies have shown most Canadians think Millennials are the most likely to partake in distracted driving, and it seems the demographic agrees with them. A new poll from Leger on behalf of Allstate Insurance Company of Canada shows Millennials know they are most likely to operate a vehicle while distracted.
The study found eighty per cent of Canadians believe drivers under 34 years of age are most likely to be distracted. Leger conducted the survey amongst 1,982 Canadians during February. Millennials admitted their likelihood to drive distracted, with 69 per cent admitting their age group is the most likely.
Younger drivers also seem to lack general awareness about what exactly constitutes distracted driving.
“Two actions nearly all Canadians agree cause distraction behind the wheel are using a mobile device and grooming (at 94 per cent and 93 per cent, respectively),” Allstate study results show.
There is evidence of a worrying meeting point where Millennials are more likely to perform distracted driving, while also beliving they can maintain control of a vehicle while performing certain tasks. For example, the following behaviours are not considered distracting by the age group.
“We want to make sure Canadians are clear on what is distracted driving,” says Lisa McWatt, a spokeswoman for Allstate Insurance Company of Canada. “We want to make sure they are not just considering cell phones. Any time you are behind the wheel, you are taking on that responsibility to be a safe driver, and we would like Canadians to focus on their driving. By building awareness of what drivers can control, we think we can have a positive impact.”
“There definitely is a correlation, just like there is between drinking and driving, between distracted driving and accident rates,” McWatt says.
