The Takata air bag scandal cost lives and resulted in the Japanese company going bankrupt amidst heavy fines and sanctions. However, auto manufacturers also let down customers by failing to recall and repair more than 21 million affected vehicles quickly enough.
In a report analysis, The Associated Press says major brands were too slow to help solve the problem. By March 31 this year, 10 million inflators with high risk of fault were still in use in vehicles around the world. Documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that 10 carmakers were responsible for the active vehicles.
16 people have died globally from exploding inflators, while 180 have been injured. Takata airbags were in dozens of car models and the results was the biggest automotive recall in U.S. history, spanning 19 brands and 42 million vehicles. 100 million inflators have been recalled around the world.
“The long and short of it is the recall is failing,” said U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Florida.
