Aviva Canada has announced that its Aviva Pitch Day is returning in 2017. The first Pitch Day in 2016 was a success and the company will continue to invest in digital start-ups around the world. Like last year, the initiative is being driven by Aviva Ventures.
Toronto will be the base for Aviva Canada’s Pitch Day, which will take place on Sept. 9. In a press release, the company says there is $170 million to be invested globally over the next four years “in digital start-ups that will help shape the future of insurance.”
Submissions are now open. “Through a selection and shortlisting process, the top 10 Canadian-based digital start-up submissions will pitch to a panel of Aviva advisors at Aviva Canada’s Digital Garage in downtown Toronto for their chance to be considered for an investment of up to $10 million,” the company said.
“We saw the high demand for disruptors looking to take their businesses to the next level at last year’s Pitch Day event,” said Aviva Canada’s chief information officer, Ben Isotta-Riches, said in the release. “We can’t wait to once again collaborate with start-ups who can offer unique ideas to create positive change for our almost three million customers here in Canada. We’ve only just scratched the surface in building a massive insurtech community in Canada.”
Aviva Ventures has been making investments in Canada this year, including in Caslova, a real estate marketplace. The start-up was shortlisted at last year’s Aviva Pitch Day, before the company invested $2.5 million.
“We are excited to be tapping the Canadian marketplace for potential high-growth, digital start-ups that will help us transform the insurance industry,” said Ben Luckett, managing director at Aviva Ventures. “By putting innovation and digital as our core focus, we will be able to make insurance easier and simpler for our customers.”
Start-ups in Canada interested in Aviva Pitch Day can submit an application through www.avivapitchday.ca, the deadline for submissions is Aug. 11.
