B.C. Greens Create Uber Legislation

By: , Published on , Last Update on August 22, 2017 08:26 AM

The Green Party of British Columbia has announced it will create legislation to allow ridesharing companies like Uber to operate in the province. The party will table the legislation this fall, which will put the spotlight on the ruling NDP government to adopt ridesharing and create a timeline for its legalization.

Andrew Weaver, leader of the party, says he hopes the government will adopt modern technologies and Vancouver now needs ridesharing solution. Weaver reminded the NDP that Vancouver is the largest city in North America without Uber.

"The government cannot stick its head in the sand when it comes to new technology," he said.

The B.C. Greens hope its proposed legislation will push the government into action, although the tactic has failed twice before, in April 2016 and February 2017. Like in other provinces, Uber’s potential expansion is controversial as it comes at the detriment of existing taxi services. However, customers have largely embraced ridesharing and governments are starting to realise the economic rewards.

Responding to the Green Party, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure in B.C., Claire Trevana, said the government is “well aware” of the need to find a solution for ridesharing.

"I'm looking forward to working with Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver and a full range of stakeholders as we develop a made in B.C. plan that protects jobs that currently exist while ensuring British Columbians have access to the modern ridesharing services they expect," she wrote.
