Bill S-2: significant changes to Motor Vehicle Safety Act soon to be law

By: , Published on , Last Update on March 1, 2018 01:46 PM

A vehicle safety bill is closer to becoming law after passing the House of Commons on Wednesday. Bill S-2 will introduce legislation for vehicle safety recalls and focus on prospective automotive technology.

Karen McCrimmon, Liberal MP for Kanata-Carleton, Ont., describes the bill as “one of the most significant changes” to the federal Motor Vehicle Safety Act, which has been virtually untouched over its 47-year life. The major changes will arise as the transport minister will now have power to mandate vehicle manufacturers to fix defects and non-compliance and issue a recall.

“If a situation arose today with a vehicle, tire, or child seat where there was clear evidence that the product contained a safety defect that could put the safety of Canadians in jeopardy and the company did not agree and was not voluntarily issuing a recall, there would be little that could be done except to take the company to court,” Transport Minister Marc Garneau said earlier.
