Canadians unchanged on autonomous vehicles

Around a quarter (26%) of Canadian said they “couldn’t wait” for autonomous vehicles to be available to consumers in the country. A new study by Kanetix shows that most Canadians remain unchanged from the same survey carried out in 2016.

The results a year ago showed that 25% of Canadians were looking forward to driverless vehicles coming to the market. The study was conducted in December 2016 over 1,000 Canadians (nationally represented). Kanetix says the accuracy was to within +/-3 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Most respondents are still unbothered by the idea of autonomous vehicles. 56% of those asked say they will base an opinion on how well the technology works. At the moment, 18% value the motoring experience too much and are completely against self-driving vehicles. In terms of demographics, younger drivers (18 to 34) are the most excited about autonomous technology.

“Technology is continually improving and innovating, and we’ve already seen auto manufacturers incorporate self-driving safety aspects in some existing vehicles, such as automatic emergency braking (AEB) or sensors that temporarily control steering to avoid collisions,” said Andrew Lo, chief operating officer and tech expert at Kanetix.ca. “It’s still a jump for most people to make in terms of going completely driverless but Canadians are interested in these improved safety features and, as a result, seem willing to slowly adopt more automated functions.”

“Some of these improved safety features have caught the eye of insurers,” Lo said in the release, pointing to an Aviva Canada discount plan which will reward drivers with autonomous vehicles with 15% off their premium. “It’s expected that more insurers will follow,” Lo said.

“In any case, Canadians feel they have plenty of time before driverless cars will be available to the public; 80 per cent say it won’t happen for another 15 or more years,” the release concluded.
