CTA makes several distracted driving recommendations

Distracted driving is now among the leading causes of road-related fatalities and injuries in Canada, and authorities across the country are turning focus towards combatting the infraction. Transport Canada recently held a national roundtable to discuss distracted driving, including punishment deterrents and driver education.

Among the voice joining the roundtable were the Quebec Trucking Association and Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA).

Sessions were held to focus on steps industries are taking to push back against distracted driving. Participants also discussed how to engage motorists enough to prevent them from using electronic devices when driving or walking. Awareness and education are valuable tools and sessions focused on helping to raise awareness.

CTA noted that distracted driving is now the leading cause of collision, passing the risk caused by both speeding and impaired driving. The alliance says prevention, planning, monitoring, enforcement and evaluation are all needed to help combat distracted driving.

Additionally, the CTA called for distracted driving aspects to become a part of standard training for truck drivers. Also among the recommendations for the CTA was an increase use of electronic logging devices (ELDs), which help reduce distraction, and new regulations for forward-facing cameras on all heavy vehicles.
