Ford recalls further 2,800 Ranger vehicles because of Takata airbags

Ford has announced a major vehicle recall in the United States and Canada. The recall involves the company’s popular pickup trucks that have faulty airbags.

Last year, Ford recalled 800,000 vehicles with an airbag malfunction. This latest recall is not as extensive, with 2,900 Ranger pickup trucks involved from both the United States and Canada. The recall comes after a 56-year-old from West Virginia was killed by an exploding Takata airbag inflator.

Japanese company Takata was rocked by the scandal and lost billions of dollars. Steve Mollohan, the man killed by the exploding component was driving a 2006 Ford Ranger. However, dozens of vehicle models from numerous manufacturers were affected by the scandal. The Ford being operated by Mollohan was involved in only a minor collision.

Ford conducted an investigation and found the inflator was made the same day as another Takata bag that exploded and killed a man in South Carolina in another Ranger during 2015.

“We take this matter very seriously and are advising owners of these specific 2006 Ford Rangers to stop driving their vehicles so dealers can make repairs immediately,” Ford said in a statement.

Elizabeth Weigandt, a spokeswoman for the automotive giant said Ford dealers will make repairs on vehicles at the owner’s residence or tow them in. The company will also provide a loaner vehicles while the Ranger is fixed.

“It’s critical that this message reaches all affected owners,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a response to the recall announcement. “It is extremely important that all high-risk air bags are tracked down and replaced immediately.”
