High 2016 speed-related deaths behind Saskatchewan’s new tougher stance on speeding drivers

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) has officially published its data for speeding-related deaths during 2016 in the province. The public insurance provider says there were 22 fatalities related to speeding during the year.

Also during 2016, 124,000 speeding tickets were issued by police to offending motorists, while 579 people were injured on provincial roads with speed being a defining factor. SGI provides all basic auto insurance coverage in Saskatchewan and says it was shocked by the amount of convictions during 2016.

“Our reaction was whoa, that’s a lot of speeding convictions,” SGI manager of media relations Tyler McMurchy told CBC News.

In an effort to remedy the high numbers of speeding convictions, SGI says it will implement a spotlight on the issue. The company runs monthly motoring spotlights to bring awareness to driving behaviors that are both illegal and dangerous. The release of the speeding data from 2016 is the first step of the speed-focused April “Traffic Safety Spotlight.”

“We want to tell people that there is no need to speed. Posted speed limits are not suggestions,” he added.

The province is also coming down harder on drivers caught speeding. Starting May 01, 2018, the low-end fine for a speeding ticket will increase by $30, while all per-kilometer charges will be doubled from the same date. Under the current system, drivers going 20 km/h over the designated speed limit face a $130 fine. With the new increase, the same offence will carry a fine of $190. Higher fines will be meted out for drivers flaunting speed limits in school and construction zones.

“Driving faster than the speed limit or too fast for road conditions is a high-risk behavior and it disrupts your control and reaction time,” he remarked.
