IBC and PEI highlight Highway Traffic Act amendments

Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has announced a new collaboration with the Prince Edward Island Department of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy and Cycling PEI. The partnership is focused on highlighting recent changes made to the Highway Traffic Act and improving road safety for motorists and cyclists.

"I am delighted to congratulate the Government of PEI and all stakeholders on these important amendments," said Amanda Dean, Vice-President, Atlantic, IBC. "Road safety is something that IBC's members are passionate about. In fact, many of today's most effective road safety measures are the result, in part, of insurer advocacy. However there is still more that can be done. IBC will continue to work with governments across Canada to make our roads safer."

The Government of PEI has recently made amendments to the Highway Traffic Act. The changes aim to improve safety conditions by urging drivers and cyclists to ‘Share the Road’. Among the amendments include a new one metre rule, while mandates drivers to leave one metre between their vehicle and bike when passing a bicycle.

"This campaign aims to raise awareness of important legislative changes aimed at making our Island roads safer for cyclists," said the Hon. Paula Biggar, Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy, Government of PEI. "By working with groups like Insurance Bureau of Canada and Cycling PEI, we can make sure that PEI's roads are safer for everyone."

"Changes like those being made to the Highway Traffic Act happen when citizens and communities recognize that our roadways must be safe for everyone," said Mike Connelly, Executive Director, Cycling PEI. "We all must share the road. We all have a role to play in keeping cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians safe."
