IBC warns home insurance customers about tree management

Home insurance is essential to help protect property against damage, but preventative measures can mean you never need to make a claim. We have seen this year how rains and strong winds can cause huge damage to homes, and the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is advising customers on how to make sure their properties are storm proof.

Importantly, most home insurance policies protect homes from damaged sustained by natural disaster or weather events. For example, falling trees are usually covered, but only if the tree is healthy before the storm. If an insurance company determines the tree was ready to fall before the storm, it may not pay out on a claim.

The IBC says all home insurance customers should be clear about what is covered on their policy and under which terms. The best way to do this is to contact your insurance company.

Additionally, the bureau says customers should check trees that surround property to ensure they are healthy.

The advice is a part of the IBC’s “Know Your Policy” campaign, which urges customers of all insurance types to be aware of the details of their policy.

"As consumers, we often invest a significant amount of time researching purchases for household or personal items than we do researching our insurance products," says Sally Turney, Vice-President, Communications, IBC.

"For those who have insurance this campaign is designed to help consumers better understand why they should know what their policy covers. If you don't have insurance for your car, home or business, now is the time to ask questions and protect your most-valuable assets."
