The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) has reported the extent of insurance claims caused by the wildfires that have swept through the province this summer. The provincial insurance company says it has received 124 claims at a total cost of $500,000 so far.

Wildfires continue to burn in British Columbia and have also impacted private insurance company. ICBC handles auto insurance in the BC, but not all home insurance products. The $500,000 cost based on 124 claims is specifically for vehicle claims.

In a press release, the company says this is the “worst wildfire season in the province’s history,” and comprehensive insurance is still available upon renewal. Customers are advised to contact their Autoplan broker to know more.

“Our goal is to be as responsive as possible to our customers who are caught in these unfortunate situations,” said Mark Blucher, ICBC’s president and CEO, in the release. “We have insurance and claims experts who are focused on responding to our customers’ needs and supporting our brokers under these trying circumstances.”

Kevin Skrepnek of the BC Wildfire Service says 19 of the blazes in the province have merged into the largest wildfire in British Columbia history and is burning over 4,674 square kilometres.
