ICBC warns drivers to pay attention to motorcyclists this summer

The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) has issued a warning for drivers and motorcycle riders. The crown corporation auto insurance provider says there will be more bike riders on the roads of British Columbia during the summer. Driver are cautioned to pay extra attention to see motorcycle riders, especially at night.

A statement released by the company says 1,600 motorcyclists were injured in the province during 2016 and there were 2,600 total collisions. Distracted driving is the chief cause of incidents, with drivers of cars hitting motorcyclists without seeing them.

In an effort to inform drivers, ICBC also published more motorcycle collision statistics:

  • Lower Mainland – 940 motorcyclists were injured in 1,500 crashes. On average, 12 motorcyclists are killed in crashes each year in the region.

 

  • Vancouver Island – 310 motorcyclists were injured in 520 crashes. On average, six motorcyclists are killed in crashes each year in the region.

 

  • Southern Interior – 330 motorcyclists were injured in 440 crashes. On average, 11 motorcyclists are killed in crashes each year in the region.

 

  • North Central region – 47 motorcyclists were injured in 73 crashes. On average, five motorcyclists are killed in crashes each year in the region.
