Insurer tells auto insurance speeders their business is not wanted

One insurer is clamping down on drivers who speed by telling them their customer is not wanted. The president of a St. John’s-based (Newfoundland and Labrador) sent an email to all auto insurance clients warning them the company will not insure them if they are caught speeding.

Tom Hickey, president of Wedgwood Insurance speaks about the problems being caused by collisions around the province.

“Forget the insurance type of stuff, we’ve had the calls from clients who have been struck by people who are speeding, who have had people killed or injured, and it’s a burden people shouldn’t have to bear because it’s so completely needless,” Hickey said in his letter, which was also reposted on Twitter.

Speaking to CBC, Hickey says the email came after he saw speeding data from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. A number of fatal accidents have occurred in the province and Hickey says he has experienced difficult calls with surviving families of people killed in collisions.

Distracted and impaired driving are increasing, but speeding remains a massive problem:

“So here is our message to you drivers doing 144 km/h: We don’t want your business,” he wrote.

However, Hickey and his business face a problem. Wedgwood Insurance is unable to drop clients cause speeding as auto insurance is mandatory. However, he says he will do everything he can to transfer such drivers to the Facility Association. This would mean vastly increased premiums.

“In cases where people meet the criteria to go to Facility, we’re going to make sure they go there. We’re not going to be looking for accommodations,” Hickey said.
