July storms in Saskatchewan result in 1,000 claims

Two storms that hit Saskatchewan earlier this month brought more than 1,000 claims to the province’s public insurance providers.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) reports the storms occurred on July 9 and 10 as two consecutive systems struck southern areas of the province. Torrential rain and hail fell, resulting in 716 auto claims and 228 property claims to the insurer.

SGI points out the majority of the claims (649 auto and 139 property) were for damage caused by hail.

Speaking about the event, SGI manager of media relations Tyler McMurchy says the company is not surprised by the amount of claims considering the nature of the storms.

“This was definitely a significant storm event and we know many people were affected by it, but it’s kind of a fact of life when you’re living in Saskatchewan,” he told Swift Current Online.

“Hail does effect cars to a significant degree [compared to houses],” noted McMurchy, who explained the reason there were more auto claims than property. “When you’re looking at a large amount of hail, the damage can be more severe to the auto body.”

While hail was the primary cause of damage, there was a combine auto/property claims number of 122 for wind damage and 34 claims for flooding/sewer back-up/water damage.

Earlier this month, the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) revealed June storms across Saskatchewan and Manitoba cost public insurers in those provinces over $90 million.
