MADD urges Canadians to avoid true horror stories on the roads this Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner and people will spend the night trick or treating and joining in the spooky festivities. However, Mothers Against Drink Driving (MADD Canada) says Halloween can turn into a real horror story if drivers drink and drive.

Once again, the group has teamed with Allstate Insurance Company of Canada to urge Canadians to keep their Halloween celebrations off the road. Drinking and partying is fine, but drivers should not get behind the wheel after.

"As Canadians prepare to celebrate Halloween this weekend and next week, we're asking everyone to put the keys away if they're going to be drinking or consuming drugs," said MADD Canada National President Patricia Hynes-Coates. "Driving impaired could end with a licence suspension, thousands of dollars in fines, jail time, or, worst of all, a death or injury. Leave the driving to someone sober."

In a press release, the partners say hundreds of Canadians lose their lives and thousands more are injured each year from drink or drug impaired driving incidents. MADD Canada asks drivers to follow these guidelines:

  • Don't drive impaired.
  • Don't ride with an impaired driver.
  • Call 911 if you see a driver you suspect is impaired.

"Getting behind the wheel impaired is a decision that could haunt you forever," said Allstate Insurance Company of Canada President and Chief Executive Officer Ryan Michel. "Don't risk your own life or the lives of others. Plenty of options are available for a safe and sober ride. Plan ahead before the celebrations begin."

MADD is once again alluding to its partnership with ride-sharing giant Uber. The organization says Uber, a taxi, or pre-arranged designated driver and public transport are all alternatives to impaired driving this Halloween.
