Manitoba places tough requirements on retailers ahead of cannabis legalization

Canada’s Cannabis Act will pass into law on Oct. 17 and provincial authorities are finalizing their plans ahead of the legalization of marijuana for recreational use. In Manitoba, retailers who plan to sell cannabis will have to do so amid strict rules regarding how they display pot in their stores. Additionally, shop owners must will also face tough rules about securing cannabis.

The province has set requirements for stores to beef up their security systems with monitored alarms and video surveillance, both of which are mandated to be in continuous operations. Stores will only be able to display small amounts of cannabis in display containers. However, these displays will have to be secured by a chain or similar locking mechanism.

Other marijuana kept in stock must be stored in locked cases. In terms of retail to consumer transactions, Manitoba demands stores to limit sales to 30 grams per individual, while consumers will have to show identification to prove they are over 19.

Manitoba has already detailed the high penalties in place for anyone who breaks its cannabis rules. Lawmakers in the province this week confirmed a $2,542 fine for individuals caught growing their own recreational growths at home.

In a written statement issued earlier this week, Manitoba Justice Minister Cliff Cullen says the laws will help keep the market secure:

“Our government has consistently emphasized our commitment to keep cannabis out of the hands of our youth and away from the black market,” Cullen said.
