MPI expects $20 million bill for recent hailstorm

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) says it estimates the cost of a recent thunderstorm to be as much as $20 million. The government-run insurance provider says the figure will cover claims from a major thunderstorm that affected southern regions in the province last week. During the storm, parts of Manitoba were hit by hail, with stones reported as large as softballs.

2,000 claims for damage have already been filed, according to CBC News. At a minimum, MPI is expected to be facing a bill of $10 million to cover insurance losses.

“We expect that number to rise significantly as the days go on,” MPI spokesperson Brian Smiley said, suggesting it could be more. In the statement, Smiley also noted the areas most affected by the storm were Ninette, Manitou, Morden, and Winkler.

The thunderstorm occurred on June 14 and the hail was accompanied by winds of 100 km/h. During the thunderstorm, southern parts of the province suffered power outages, while trees were felled and properties were damaged.

Winkler and Ninette were worst hit by hail, prompting MPI to create dedicated hail centres in the towns to process claims from residents.
