MPI publishes distracted driving data

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) has officially announced the insurance costs associated with distracted driving, estimated to be at $70 million.

MPI spokesperson Brian Smiley spoke to Canadian Underwriter and said that direct insurance losses came from bodily injury, other benefits and damage to vehicles and were paid out by the public insurance provider to collisions from distracted driving.

The company points out that these losses ultimately affects consumers, who absorb the costs and pay more for their premiums. In its presented data, the basic level auto insurance provider shows that collisions caused by distracted driving grew 4.5 times over five years. There were 2,415 collisions in 2011, a number that grew to 11,086 in 2016.

Indeed, one in three deaths caused each year on the province’s roads were caused by distracted driving. Smiley points out distracted driving statistics are from driver statements, witnesses, and police reports.

Distracted driving is caused by:

  • texting while driving
  • talking on a cellphone while driving
  • having an animated conversation with a passenger
  • eating a lunch, or
  • applying makeup.

“If there is a collision that had any of those factors, it would be determined to be a distracted driving-related collision,” Smiley said.
