Ontario will have a first Chief Digital Officer (CDO), the province Ministry for Advanced Education and Skills Development announced on Friday. The ministry has started what it describes as a global search for a CDO who will help Ontario’s “transformation to become the most open, transparent and digitally connected government in Canada.”

The initiative was first announced by the Liberal government in Ontario’s 2016 Budget, and in a press release the ministry said the CDO will have several duties. The position will be held in Toronto and the candidate with be a Deputy Minister who reports to the Secretary of the Cabinet and head of the Ontario Public Service.

CDO duties will include heading the province’s Digital Government Office in Toronto and chairing the first digital board held in Ontario. The candidate will also report to Deb Matthews, who is the Deputy Premier and Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development.

The CDO will have the “important job of setting and executing a bold vision for Ontario through its Digital Government Action Plan – the province’s roadmap for change,” the release said. “This digital transformation will put people first and design faster, cheaper, and more convenient services using modern and emerging technologies.”

Digital is becoming the primary way in which people interact, especially in terms of seeking out government information in Ontario. It is also becoming an increasingly important channel for insurance providers, who are engaging more customers through smartphone applications and websites. The press release said 74% of people looking for government information visit a website.

“Public expectations have been shaped by their experiences using private-sector digital services, and we want to meet – or exceed – those expectations,” Matthews said in the release. “This is a one-of-a-kind senior executive opportunity to reinvent government for the digital age.”

“This is a one-of-kind senior executive opportunity to reinvent government for the digital age, to partner with all parts of a 60,000+ person organization, to ignite disruption and innovation, to mobilize new ideas, measure performance, and build upon success – in one of the best places to live in the world,” the posting said.
