Record-breaking Ontario fire season continues with some blazes out of control

By: , Published on , Last Update on August 30, 2018 05:21 PM

Ontario is on course for a record wildfire season and wildfires continue to burn around the province. More than 1,000 forest fires have occurred in Ontario so far in 2018, with weeks still left in the season.

Indeed, this year has already nearly doubled the total of 561 blazes throughout the entirety of 2017. Fire crews have brought a majority under control or extinguished them totally, but some persistent blazes continue to burn.

Among them is the so-called Parry Sound 33, an enormous forest first that is currently out of control. The fire spreads across 110 square kilometres and has caused people to be evacuated from homes and spread thick smoke across the region.

The unrelenting blaze is still not under control, despite 556 firefighters tackling the fire. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says each firefighting team is made up of four people and has to contend with one-square kilometre of land.
