SGI reports high impaired and distracted drivers through May

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) reports there were 324 impaired driving-related offences in Saskatchewan during May. The provincial public insurer points out these offences came the same month as it’s impaired driving awareness campaign was launched.

With these offences occurring during the traffic safety spotlight, SGI says the numbers serve as “another reminder of why such campaigns are needed.”

Of the 324 offences confirmed in a release, SGI says 280 were Criminal Code of Canada charges, among them impaired driving, refusing a breath test, or exceeding a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08. A further 44 offences were roadside suspensions for new and inexperienced drivers.

As well as impaired driving, SGI also reports an increase in speeding and aggressive driving offences. The insurer says Police clamped down during the spotlight month and there were 6,159 total offences. This represents the highest number of speeding tickets in Saskatchewan since October 2015.

SGI also monitored distracted driving offences through May and recorded 364 offences during the month, with 251 directly related to cellphone use. The crown corporation also observed 469 seatbelt, car seat, or booster violations.

Saskatchewan is fighting an impaired driving surge which makes the offence the deadliest on the province’s roads.

“It’s 100 per cent preventable and – with the tougher new legislation introduced in Saskatchewan at the beginning of the year – 100 per cent not worth the risk,” the statement said.

The province now implements a three-day vehicle seizure program for experienced drivers with a BAC over .04, and a zero tolerance for drivers aged 21 and under.
