Students given crash-simulation to warn of distracted driving dangers

Distracted and impaired driving are huge problems for Canadian drivers and pedestrians, with both killing thousands of people across the country each year. In an attempt to educate people about the dangers of impaired and distracted driving, and are starting young to make sure the message gets across.

By entering schools, awareness groups and authority hope to highlight the reality of how drugs, alcohol, and using device at the wheel can affect drivers. Students at Tecumseh Vista Academy recently saw how these practices can have devastating results.

Police and first responders from Essex County in Windsor demonstrated a collision at a special event. The mocked accident showed the impact caused by distracted or impaired driving.

Among the activities at the event included a demonstration by first responders to show how they would remove an injured motorist from a crashed vehicle. Students could also play interactive games, such as wearing googles that gave them the vision of being drunk.

The London Health Sciences Centre conducted a presentation to show the various consequences of distracted driving. Provincial police plan to put on similar events at L'Essor Secondary School on Thursday and at St. Anne's High School next week.
