The Co-operators and TIRF debut online hub for distracted driving resources

By: , Published on , Last Update on January 31, 2018 02:50 PM

The Co-operators is collaborating with the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) to launch an online hub that brings resources to local government and stakeholders to create effective strategies for combatting distracted driving.

Also on board is the Canadian Coalition on Distracted Driving (CCDD), an entity both The Co-operators and TIRF are part of. The resource hub will provide local authorities with the latest research and data on distracted driving, while also give information on laws and penalties across the country. Other resources will also be available, such as educational tools.

TIRF president and CEO Robyn Robertson says the online database allows users to get information more efficiently to focus on reducing distracted driving levels.

“All agencies are incredibly concerned about the safety of Canadians, their workforce, and their families and friends,” the executive said. “Everyone has the same questions about the size of the problem, what is known, what data is available, and what strategies can reduce distracted driving.”

“Consider that a driver traveling at 100km/hr travels the length of a hockey rink within just two seconds while distracted. It’s easy to see why distracted driving is a recipe for disaster,” said Rob Wesseling, president and CEO of The Co-operators.

“The work of the CCDD continues to provide actionable solutions that communities and workplaces can embrace to help resolve this growing issue, and make meaningful changes to protect drivers and pedestrians,” Wesseling added.
