Trudeau confirms regeneration of Toronto’s waterfront to bring flood protection

By: , Published on , Last Update on June 30, 2017 04:27 AM

The federal government announced that a section of Toronto’s waterfront will undergo a regeneration project focused on flood protection. The $1.2 billion project will also rejuvenate the area.

Launched by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Mayor John Tory, the initiative will see the Toronto Port Lands Flood Protection project get a makeover. The three leaders introduced the project in a joint news conference.

Trudeau pointed to the impact of global warming and the problems it has caused over the past decade as increased flooding has occurred. This rise in overland flooding has affected urban areas so the new project will bring added protection. It will achieve this by creating a naturalized mouth for the Don River.

Furthermore, the contaminated soil in the area will be cleaned. The project will also unlock currently unused industrial land and develop it by creating new habitats and wetlands for local wildlife.

In the press conference, the politicians explained that the project will bring a long-term change to the Port Lands area and create mixed-use communities that sport commercial and residential development. Affordable housing is top of the list, while green space will be created by building parks in the surrounding area.

As for funding, $384 million will come from the federal government, while Ontario and the City of Toronto will provide more than $400 million each.
