Waterloo at risk from snowmelt flooding

Waterloo, Ontario, is at an increased risk of flooding in the coming months and residents are being warned of the dangers. Melting snow will present a very high risk of flooding in the city.

Barbara Robinson, president of Norton Engineering spoke to CBC News this week and explained people in Waterloo should start preparing for floods this week. Snowmelt is already causing an excess of water in sewers under the city streets.

Environment Canada says the temperature in the region will soon 6 °C, more than enough to cause major snowmelt.

Robinson warned about warm weather bringing increased flooding to Waterloo. Melting snow brings a lot of water, which needs to go somewhere. She explains the water can end up on basements during to snowmelt escaping from remaining snow.

“Snow is melting and it has a chance to go down the side of your house and we definitely don’t want that to happen,” she said.

Among Robinson’s recommendations is for homeowners to ensure catch basins located downstream are clear. Additional steps include checking downspouts are properly placed and not blocked. It also helps for homeowners to go over their insurance policies to see if their coverage protects against sewer backup.
