Windows earthquake shows risk but did not cause property damage

When thinking of earthquakes risk in Canada, we typically turn to provinces like Quebec and British Columbia. However, a tremor that shook the Windsor region of Ontario last week showed that all areas of the country can be hit by an earthquake. Despite that, the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has reassured residents that Ontario is a low risk region and no property damage was caused.

Natural Resources Canada categorized the earthquake last week, It occurred on the evening of April 10 just east of Ahmerstburg, south of Windsor on the Detroit River. The tremor recorded 4.1 on the Richter Scale. While home and tenant insurance for earthquake coverage is common in some areas of Canada, in Ontario is not deemed important.

IBC says while earthquakes can happen anywhere in the country, the region hit last week is low risk. IBC vice president of federal affairs Craig Stewart said “Damage has never been recorded in that area” since European settlement began more than 200 years ago.”

“You never say never, but it is considered relatively low risk compared to other areas in the country” such as the west coast, eastern Ontario and Quebec, suggested Stewart.

While some areas of the province have a greater risk of damage from earthquakes, homeowners and tenants in the southern Ontario region are more at risk from flooding.

“It’s always important to assess your own comfort level in terms of risk and purchase insurance accordingly,” Stewart added. “Brokers should be encouraging their clients to be aware of whatever risk they face.”
