Calgary Auto Insurance Requirements

Mandatory auto insurance

Auto insurance in Calgary is a must, for any vehicle you intend to operate on the streets and highways within the city, and throughout Alberta as a whole. Insurance protects you in the event of a collision or accident that results in property damage, vehicle damage, injury to you or towards another person. If an unused vehicle is stored on a public street it will still require auto insurance coverage that is valid and up to date.

License plates

Auto insurance is needed to purchase a license plate for any motor vehicle and proof of insurance coverage must be presented to the Motor Vehicles Registry showing a valid policy. Plates can be transferred between vehicles (for example from an old car to a new one), but an insurance policy must be transferred too, regarding any vehicle that is to be receiving the license plate.

Adding plates to a new vehicle without informing your insurer is against the law. This applies even if you have a valid auto insurance policy for an old vehicle, without informing your insurer you will be driving the new vehicle without insurance and can be fined and prosecuted. Importantly, remember that an insurance policy if for a vehicle and not for you personally, it does not follow you from auto to auto.

A new vehicle can be registered through MVR, but a new or transferred insurance policy will need to be presented.

Driving without insurance

If you operate a vehicle in any circumstance without auto insurance in Calgary, there will be legal ramifications when caught. A first offence of this kind carries a minimum fine of $2,500 and another offence within one year will result in steeper fines and mandatory jail time of at least 30 days. However, jail terms for a second annual offence for driving without insurance can be as long as six months.

The personal cost is severe as your driving license is likely to be revoked in the event of repeat offences, and worse you will be responsible financially for any damages incurred in the event of a collision or accident.

Types of coverage

Section A covers injury and damage to other people and their property

Section B covers medical expenses of anyone including yourself, injured in a motor vehicle accident

Section C covers damage to your car.

The law states that every driver should have Sections A and B as a part of their policy, and as such it is mandatory for the private auto insurance providers in Calgary to offer those types of coverage at least at their minimum levels.

Auto Insurance Calgary: What You Need To Know

Calgary is the largest city in Alberta, but it is also a region that is home to relatively low auto insurance rates compared to other regions, such as Toronto in Ontario or even Edmonton, the capital of Alberta. Like the rest of the province, Calgary is home to a private insurance model and with Shop Insurance Canada you can find quotes from over 15 auto insurance providers in the city.

Calgary auto insurance details

As our landing page says, Calgary has a minimum mandatory liability coverage of $200,000, the same amount as the province of Alberta as a whole. This means that any auto insurance provider needs to offer liability coverage of at least this amount.

No-fault insurance is also used in Calgary, which means parties involved in a collision or accident use their own insurance coverage regardless of who is at fault.

Is auto insurance in Calgary affordable?

Yes is the simply answer. It is affordable compared to other major cities in Canada, vastly more affordable than Ontario, and even more affordable than fellow Albertan city Edmonton. On average, drivers in Calgary pay $1,117 per year on their auto insurance, but of course it is worth remembering that your own particular set of circumstances will determine your policy cost.

Data actually shows that single people in Calgary pay more than the city average in fact, with the number for that demographic sitting at $2,360.

Part of the reason for the city’s affordable insurance premiums is because residents of Calgary are largely safe drivers, with 85 per cent of drivers in the city not having an accident in the last 10 years. On top of that, 54 per cent of Calgary drivers have taken an accredited driving course to aid in their abilities.

Car Insurance Quote Calgary

Saving on car insurance in Calgary is the same as saving in any other Canadian city: you have to know what coverage to look for and you have to shop around to find the best rates. The private sector provides car insurance in Calgary, like Ontario, the Maritimes, and the territories. Alberta is the only Western province that uses this type of system—Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia use a public car insurance system.

Our dedicated team of brokers at Shop Insurance Canada are here to work for you, not an insurance company, in order to find you the correct coverage and the lowest rate. Auto Insurance Coverage Requirements

The province of Alberta mandates that drivers have third-party liability coverage (minimum $200,000), accident benefits coverage, and uninsured motorist coverage. Unlike other provinces like Ontario, direct compensation—property damage coverage is not required on your Calgary auto insurance policy, meaning if someone hits you, the at-fault driver pays for the damages to your vehicle.
