While most people know that bundling your home and auto policies with the same insurance company can help bring down your rate, there are other things you can bundle to lower it even further.

Home and Auto

By far the simplest way to save is by bundling your home and auto policy with the same insurer. Since car insurance is by far the most expensive (and mandatory) of the two, most people are preoccupied with trying to find a better rate. While this is a worthwhile endeavour, simply bundling your other policies with your auto policy can bring rates down by as much as 20 per cent, and sometimes provides even further benefit to the policyholder.

For example, Aviva Canada allows customers to bundle their home, auto, and one of another car, an ATV, cottage, rental property, or snowmobile. If you choose to do this, you can receive up to a 15 per cent discount on your combined policy, as well as an additional $1 million in excess liability coverage for all policies. You also benefit from a disappearing deductible (as well as a combined deductible for your home and auto policies), meaning your deductible decreases by 20 per cent for each year you’re claims-free until it disappears.

More Vehicles

It almost goes without saying that if you’re insuring multiple vehicles, put them with the same company! Insurance companies offer a multi-vehicle discount.

However, Boats, motorcycles, RVs, and snowmobiles might be subject to a bundling discount as well, but it varies from company to company as not all companies write every type of policy. Because recreational vehicle insurance is generally more expensive because of the increased risk, bundling these policies together with one insurance company can help drastically!

Convenience

Finally, it just makes the most sense to deal with one company: one bill, one call, one interaction. Not only are you saving yourself money, but you’re also saving yourself the time!

Of course, as always, shopping around for the best rate is one of the most important steps to saving money and time. Most companies offer mutli-line discounts, so shopping for the best rate for both home and auto policies is crucial.
