Intact Insurance has announced a discount scheme that will reward drivers in Alberta who drive safely and obey the laws of the road. The company says the discount driving program will give drivers up to 25% off their auto insurance premiums.
The My Driving Discount program uses telematic driving data collected from a mobile application to assess a driver and calculate a level of discount. Based on driving habits, Intact Insurance says it can bring savings to customers in Alberta.
Canada’s largest P&C provider says to enter the program, customers must complete a nine-month assessment period. The discount would then be applied upon renewal of the existing policy. Among the monitored behaviours are hard braking and rapid acceleration:
“Customers receive a one-time discount on their premium just by signing up for the program – 10% for personal auto insurance customers and 5% for commercial auto insurance customers – which is replaced by their personalized discount of up to 25% on their next renewal following an assessment period,” the insurer explains.
How the assessment is performed depends on insurance type. Intact customers with personal auto policies can download and app on their smartphone. Those with commercial coverage use an on-board diagnostic (OBD) device that connects to their vehicle.
Intact Insurance has also launched a website that connects with the app and allows drivers to see their data and potential discounts. The company hopes customers will adjust their behavious to achieve more discounts.
The discount program has been available in Ontario since 2013 and has since expanded to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Quebec. Alberta becomes the fifth market to receive the discount scheme.
Rosa Nelson, Intact Insurance’s vice president of sales and business development, West, says the program rewards the drivers in the correct way:
“More and more, safe drivers are looking for customized insurance programs that reward them for good habits on the road and my Driving Discount does exactly that,” Nelson continues.
