NLAIW changing perceptions of male focused insurance industry

Insurance has a long-standing reputation for being an old boys club, a male driven industry that can often be tough for women to grow a career. Times have changed, of course, but work still need to be done to transform perceptions within the industry. The Newfoundland Labrador Association of Insurance Women (NLAIW) are continuing to support the development of women in insurance.

Thea Bird, a broker for Aon Risk Solutions, it the association president spoke to Insurance Business and said the NLAIW is growing its membership base since being established in 2013. Member meetings are held once a month and included bringing successful women from the insurance industry to serve as guest speakers.

Bird points out that the aim of the group is promote education and loyalty form women in insurance. NLAIW helps with charitable organizations, and Bird says “we’re trying to get more involved in our community and back out time.”

The association has also become a partner of impaired driving group Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD Canada).

Bringing more diversity to the insurance industry and promoting the inclusion of women is also a goal of the association:

“Before, it was like the old boys’ club,” she said. “It was all the men doing all the selling. But now, in this generation, women want to be more involved in the industry and want to be more successful, so I think that’s why they’re getting more involved in insurance.”

Giving advice to women wanting to break into insurance, Bird says:

“If you feel that you have the potential and you’re passionate about something, then follow that dream and don’t give up. Try to encourage and bring women together,” she said.

“Keep pushing,” she added. “There’s a lot of wonderful talented women out there with so much to give.”
